Job Interviewing 101: How to Get Hired

Posted on July 2, 2012 by Poundy

Interviewing for a job can be one of the most nerve-racking experiences — but when done right it can also be one of the most rewarding. So what can you do before and during an interview to help ensure that you’ll snag the job? We’ll tell you.

Be Prepared

Going into an interview unprepared is basically asking not to be hired. With so many competitors vying for the same job title, employers want to know that you really know your stuff.

Keep in mind:

  • Be able to answer the simple question “What do you know about this company?”
  • Do your research! Most basic company information can be found on a company’s ‘About Us’ page.
  • Review any information you’ve found on the company and print a copy to review right before your interview.

Dress Appropriately

According to Monster.com, you should always dress one or two levels higher than the job that you’re interviewing for — regardless of whether or not the job requires a uniform.

Keep in mind:

  • There’s no better way to show a company that you’re interested in working for them than to look like you care.
  • Even if you know you’ll be wearing a uniform, dress business professional (e.g. blazer, dress pants, button down or blouse).
  • Have a clean face. That means shaving and removing any piercings. It’s important to look professional when making a first impression.

Stay Positive

Was your last boss a total head case? Doesn’t matter. Even if you can’t stand him or her, keep it to yourself — no one wants to hire a disgruntled worker.

Keep in mind:

  • It’s a small world and you never know who your interviewer might know.
  • Even if it’s true, it’s unprofessional to talk about others when they don’t have the opportunity to defend themselves.
  • You don’t want your interviewer to think that you might turn around and bad mouth them the same way you did your last employer.

Anticipate Tough Questions

Employers want to see how you think. Nowadays, many interviewers will ask questions that are a bit more challenging — just to see how you formulate your answer.

Keep in mind:

  • Be prepared to answer anything from “What are your weaknesses?” to “If you could be any animal, which would it be and why?”
  • Don’t get nervous and answer off the top of your head. It’s ok to take your time and really think about what it is you want to say.
  • Come back at them with your own questions. Asking thoughtful questions during an interview is almost as important as giving good answers.
