10 Home Décor Tips to Make Your House a Home

If you’re moving into a new space or if your current place is just getting a bit stale, it may be time to focus on improving your home décor. If that sounds like a chore, well that’s because it can be. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of 10 tips you can use to make redecorating a little bit easier!

1. Decorate Gradually

One of the easiest ways home décor can become overwhelming is if you try to do it all at once. Building your place piece by piece allows you to think through the items you truly want and need, as well as find those items when they are on sale. Don’t just settle for a piece you find because you’re redecorating — wait to find the pieces you love!

2. Upcycle Old Furniture

You might have that piece of “new” furniture already sitting around! Or maybe it’s out in the alley behind your home or in the thrift store down the street. Think about ways you can get crafty with old furniture. Maybe a fresh stain or a new coat of paint can breathe life into something otherwise undesirable. Using peel-and-stick reusable wallpaper can do the trick on old furniture too!

3. Shop Secondhand, Thrift and Consignment Stores

These stores have bargains galore! Many quality furniture pieces age well, so they often last much longer than the original owners. See what you can find, and consider our previous tip as a way to dress up your finds to match your place perfectly.

4. Use Social Media

Community Facebook groups are one place you can go to look for items to fill out your home. Facebook Marketplace is another. You might be surprised to find an item that is just the right fit for what you are looking for!

5. Look for Seasonal Items Right After the Holidays

This tip is probably fairly well known, but seasonal items become steeply discounted after the season is over, so holiday decorations and seasonal décor that isn’t holiday specific are great to pick up at the end of the season and stashed until the season rolls around next year.

6. A Fresh Coat of Paint Goes a Long Way

Painting a room in your house might seem like it’s a big expensive project, but it doesn’t have to be if you can do it yourself. Changing the colour of a room is a really great way to breathe new life into your home.

7. Don’t Neglect Nature

Speaking of breathing life into your home, another way to do so is to bring life into your home with some plants! Add some house plants or terrariums around the house to keep things vibrant, and make sure to utilise as much natural light as possible!

8. Always Shop for a Rug in Person

Rugs are not one of those home décor pieces you want to shop for online. Colours may be slightly different than what you see online, and it’s hard to get a read on the texture and the quality.

9. Never Settle on One “Look”

As you grow as a person, so too should your home! When you find items you love, let them into your home and work them into your other décor as well as you can. This will allow your home to evolve along with you as a great reflection of the person (or people) living there.

10. Invest in the Pieces that Anchor The Room

This tip is especially important when you’re on a budget. Consider that it wouldn’t be a bedroom without a bed, it’s not really a living room without a couch and it’s not dining room without a table. These critical pieces are starting points to build out the rest of your home décor. Make sure you get these pieces as true to your style as you can and the rest of your home can come together around them.
