How to Make Your Own Grooming Products

Even if you’re using low-priced soap, shampoo and toothpaste, you’re inevitably paying much more than you need to. These items are fairly expensive, especially considering how often they need to be replaced.

If you’re a savvy saver who wants to cut costs on the little things and have the motivation to make it happen, you can stock your shelves with homemade versions that cost pennies to the pound of the brand-name versions. Better yet, there are many recipes for homemade grooming products that are all natural and call for ingredients that you already have.

Shampoo

Ingredients:

  • 25 g of your favorite herbal tea (strongly brewed)
  • 8 ounces of liquid castile soap

Directions:

  1. Stir the two ingredients over low heat until blended.
  2. Store in a capped bottle.

Tips:

  • Try an herbal tea with lemon or aloe.
  • Liquid castile soap can typically be found at any craft store.

Conditioner

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 480 ml water

Directions:

  1. Combine the ingredients and funnel into a squirt bottle.
  2. Massage into hair and scalp for two minutes, then rinse.

Tips:

  • Shake the bottle before each use.
  • After drying, the vinegar smell will leave your hair.

Toothpaste

Ingredients:

  • 55 g baking soda
  • 120 ml coconut oil
  • 30 – 40 drops peppermint essential oil

Directions:

  1. Microwave coconut oil until pourable.
  2. Combine all ingredients and mix vigorously.
  3. Transfer it into a tight lidded jar.

Tips:

  • There is no need to refrigerate. The toothpaste will stay good up to six months.

Body Wash

Ingredients:

  • 120 ml coconut oil
  • 60 ml raw honey
  • 120 ml liquid Castile soap
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil
  • 15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil

Directions:

  1. Microwave coconut oil until pourable.
  2. Mix together coconut oil, honey, vitamin E and essential oils in a bowl.
  3. Slowly stir in Castile soap.
  4. Transfer to glass or plastic bottle.

Tips:

  • Do not mix everything together at once – the Castile soap will make suds if mixed too much.
  • Shake the bottle before each use.

Sunscreen

Ingredients:

  • 240 ml coconut oil
  • 60 ml beeswax
  • 30 ml red raspberry seed oil
  • 30 ml shea butter
  • 2 tbsp non nano, uncoated zinc oxide
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil
  • 20 drops carrot seed oil

Directions:

  1. Combine coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter in a double boiler.
  2. Heat on low until melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 1 – 2 minutes.
  3. Mix in the remaining ingredients.
  4. Transfer to jar and allow to cool before applying.

Tips:

  • Add the zinc oxide last – it will thicken the mixture quite a bit.
  • Zinc oxide is the part of this mixture that protects you from the sun’s harsh rays. This may be hard to find, so you may need to order it online.

And there you have it – your most basic toiletries made at home in minutes using inexpensive and natural ingredients that you already own!
